A practical guide to Ultra Max, Signature, detail levels, and UltraRes, with project budgets that count the work you actually finish.

You should not need to buy the most demanding settings just to feel confident pressing Generate.
The useful question is simpler: what is this request supposed to accomplish?
An early composition study, a specific portrait correction, a large apparel graphic, and a quiet campaign background are different jobs. This guide will help you choose a starting configuration, recognize when to change it, and understand the cost of a completed project rather than a single promising image.
First, separate the three controls

Both modes start at Medium. Ultra Max favors faster iteration. Signature is the detail-focused mode for demanding lettering, intricate artwork, and carefully specified revisions.
Use those distinctions to make a decision, not to rank yourself as a designer. A simple, well-composed graphic can be the right finished answer.
Four starting recipes
These are starting points to test against your own work, not guarantees about the next result.
Finding a collection's direction: Start with Ultra Max at Medium. Keep the product and audience fixed while you test a meaningful composition difference. Use an output size appropriate for evaluation. Choose the direction before creating its companions.
Refining an accepted illustration: Select the correct saved version in Image Studio first. Ask for one change. Consider Signature when the problem concerns intricate shapes, lettering, or other detail-sensitive work. A higher setting cannot compensate for editing the wrong source.
Preparing a larger apparel master: Decide the intended physical dimensions, check the usable artwork bounds, and choose output size accordingly. UltraRes may be relevant here. Select the detail level separately. Review the actual export rather than assuming the preset name certifies the file.
Building a campaign background: Start with the composition: product position, light direction, and copy space. Ultra Max at Medium is a useful baseline. Spend on a more demanding request only when the scene's materials or a specific composition issue warrant it. Do not regenerate an accepted background to change a headline you can edit directly.
Diagnose the problem before raising the setting
Suppose the Christmas mailroom illustration is difficult to read. The workers are tiny, the headline is crowded, and the desk is covered in parcels.
That is first a composition problem. Try fewer objects, larger characters, or more open space. A higher detail setting could simply render the crowded scene more elaborately.
Now suppose the composition works, but the hands and envelope are tangled. A focused revision from the accepted source gives you a specific result to judge. Signature is worth considering for that kind of detail-sensitive task.
Use this decision sentence before the next request:
The result is not ready because of one specific issue: the envelope and hand shapes overlap ambiguously. The next request should clarify that relationship while preserving the accepted scene.
When you cannot finish that sentence, pause before purchasing another attempt. The next decision may need a clearer brief rather than a different mode.
Compare settings fairly enough to learn something
Keep the prompt, references, aspect ratio, and output-size request stable. Change one setting. Compare the results at the same viewing scale and against the same acceptance criteria.
For lettering, read every character. For a pet, compare defining features. For a small emblem, reduce the preview and inspect whether the idea still reads. For an apparel illustration, look at the silhouette and open spaces as well as the detail.
The Ultra Max comparison gallery provides eight briefs across five detail levels in both modes, with the prompts and original files. Its 80 outputs are individual generations, not a controlled claim that one setting always wins. The comparison images are not UltraRes demonstrations.
A result that you prefer is useful evidence for that design. Build your own small record of what works for the kinds of jobs you actually repeat.
Know what UltraRes gives you
UltraRes is the larger native-output option. In the reviewed Ultra Max release, it uses the available native pixel budget: up to 3,840 pixels on the long edge, or 2,880 × 2,880 for square artwork. Proportions determine the final dimensions, with small rounding adjustments.
That does not mean every file is 3,840 pixels wide. It also does not mean a square image is 4,096 × 4,096.
Work backward from the actual job:
Usable artwork width in pixels ÷ intended print width in inches = effective pixels per inch.
For an arithmetic example, artwork that occupies 3,600 pixels across a 12-inch print is 300 pixels per inch. At 18 inches, the same artwork is 200 pixels per inch.
Transparent padding matters. A 2,880-pixel canvas with artwork occupying only 2,400 pixels across gives 200 pixels per inch when the artwork itself is printed 12 inches wide.
Compare the export with your production provider's requirements. A larger output can supply more pixels; it does not replace spelling, edge, transparency, or physical-production checks. Changing a DPI label alone does not add image information.
Understand the quote without memorizing a price list
The final quote depends on the operation, output size, detail, and mode.
The detail factors are Low 0.5×, Medium 1×, High 1.5×, Ultra High 2×, and MAX 3×, applied to the relevant base price and rounded up. Signature then costs 1.5× the matching Ultra Max detail price, rounded up. At MAX, Signature uses 2× instead of 1.5×. Those Signature factors do not stack.
Here is a deliberately hypothetical example using a 20-credit Ultra Max Medium base for one operation and output size:

This is an explanation of the arithmetic, not an account quote. Check the total shown in DesignGen before submitting. Changing settings affects the next request, not a job already queued.
Budget the project, not just the hero image
A usable collection may require several concept candidates, one accepted main design, a correction, a companion, and campaign work. Rejected attempts still belong in the cost record.
For a second hypothetical example, assume the displayed quotes for a small project are:

Suppose those requests result in four accepted image deliverables: the revised main artwork, one companion, and two campaign scenes. The planning average is 32.5 credits per accepted deliverable, not 20. The original version replaced by its revision is not counted again as a new deliverable.
This example does not include vectorization, companion-copy charges, manual layout, or any additional production work. Record those separately where applicable. Its value is the method: count all requests and the outputs you actually kept.
Your own record may be lower or higher. That is the information to use when comparing the current plan allowance with your workload.
Keep cash, time, and creative value separate
Credits are not automatically dollar costs. Use your actual subscription and usage charges when evaluating cash spending. Do not count the same included credits once through the subscription and again as though you bought them separately.
Track hands-on minutes separately from generation waiting time. Include setup, reviewing rejected candidates, repairs, and exporting. When comparing with your earlier process, compare similar completed jobs, not an entire manual workflow against one generation.
Recovered time is valuable, but it becomes additional income only when something productive happens with it. You might use it for another order, a stronger campaign, or a less stressful finish to the day. Those are different outcomes and deserve honest labels.

When Pro is the right next step
Signature and Ultra High detail are available on paid plans. MAX detail and UltraRes require Pro or Enterprise. HighRes is available on paid plans.
Pro makes a concrete difference when access to MAX or UltraRes solves a recurring job requirement. Its current credit allowance may also fit an ongoing workload better than your present plan, but compare the live plan details with your actual project record.
You do not need to upgrade simply because one example looks impressive. Complete a real project, identify the constraint, and choose the plan that addresses it.

Your best setting is the one that helps you finish the right asset. Your best plan is the one that supports doing that again.
