A transparent file is not automatically a clean file. Inspect the cutout on white, black, and the intended surface color at its final size. If you see a halo, jagged edge, filled hole, missing detail, or blur, stop and choose the right repair path before you print, enlarge, or vectorize it.

The three frames that change the decision
The source video is unusually useful because it shows the failure, the honest second inspection, and the editable endpoint. That sequence is the standard: zoom in, change the background, then verify the actual file structure.

The first DesignGen result looks dramatically cleaner on the dark workspace, but Alex does not call the job finished. He changes the inspection context and looks again. That is the production habit worth copying: keep the untouched source available, confirm that the subject is isolated, then deliberately search for what the mask removed, filled, softened, or left behind.

Inspect the same transparent result on a checkerboard, white, black, and the intended garment or surface color. The recording demonstrates the dark-versus-white reveal; checkerboard and target color are the additional checks to run on your own file. Each view answers a different question. Checkerboard shows whether transparency exists. White and black expose opposite-color fringes and missing pale or dark details. The target color shows the real contrast risk. Check once at 100% for edge defects and once at the intended physical size for the final appearance.

Rerunning the entire image can fix one area while damaging another. A halo usually needs edge refinement. A filled letter counter needs a hole decision. Missing distress or thin rays need restoration from the source. Blur at the intended size may require a better source, a careful raster enlargement, or vectorization when the artwork is truly flat. Diagnose first so the correction stays local and reversible.

A hole is not automatically background. The counter inside a letter may need to show the shirt below it; an enclosed badge shape may be intentional printed artwork. In the video, DesignGen exposes both choices and a way to fix specific areas. Compare every enclosed space with the source, decide whether it is solid artwork or negative space, then inspect the smallest holes again after the adjustment.

The free example offers a small preview, which creates a tempting shortcut: download it and upscale it later. “Let me just stop you right there.” Enlargement can add pixels or improve a clean small raster, but it cannot reliably reconstruct a ray, letter edge, or distressed mark that the removal already destroyed. Inspect the mask first. If the source itself is malformed, replace or redraw the source before spending time on resolution.

Keep a transparent PNG when photos, gradients, soft shadows, or intentional texture are essential. Create a true SVG master when a clean logo, lettering, line art, or blocky illustration must scale, recolor, or support node-level edits. The extension is not proof: an SVG can contain an embedded raster. Open the result in a compatible editor and confirm that the intended shapes are editable paths.

A high-detail trace can create thousands of points around compression noise, distress, and rough pixels. That makes the SVG harder to edit without necessarily making it more faithful. Alex’s rule is practical: preserve the big blocky elements. Start with a restrained detail level, compare the source and preview, and increase complexity only when a meaningful line or shape is missing.

In Affinity, the converted artwork exposes editable nodes. That is the moment a vector claim becomes testable. Check letters, counters, thin rays, curved corners, and negative space. Remove only the extra nodes that do not define the artwork. If the trace changed a meaningful shape, return to the source or vector settings instead of quietly treating the change as acceptable.

For a raster file, divide pixel width by intended width in inches to get effective pixels per inch. That number is a planning signal, not a universal approval threshold—confirm the receiving printer’s requirement. Then reopen the exported file, inspect transparency and bounds, view it on the target color, and compare it with the source one last time. Background removal was only half of the journey.

Drag across the frame. The dark workspace makes the first result feel finished; the light inspection view makes it easier to question the edge and interior detail.


Use the failure you can see to choose the smallest useful correction. A different defect needs a different rescue path.

Neither option is always correct. Decide from the source artwork, then inspect the smallest enclosed shapes again.

Choose the file that preserves the visual behavior and the next person’s editing needs. Both still require inspection.

Before production handoff, confirm each item with the actual exported file—not only the tool preview.
